My condolences to Quack and your family on the your loss of our friend Johniford. He was a good fish. Please send Quack my best wishes on a speedy recovery.
My problem is I can't kill em and they grow to humongeous proportions, and then when they get old and die, its a real tragedy. I got the goldfish thing all figured out. Best thing to do is not clean out the whole tank. I do a water change once a week (1 pail full) don't forget the chlorine remover and then I do a quick filter cleanup or change depending on how long it's been in there. If you do this, they will last forever. Also overfeeding is not a good thing.
This is probably way more info than you needed or cared about LOL...
aargh, you need to let the water 'rest' for a while before putting the fish into it... they don't like 'fresh' tap water all at once. fish killer*. Sorry to hear Johniford bit the dust, he was a valiant soul what with the upside down swimming and all.
*Like I'm one to talk, once I looked after my sister's bunnies and one died. That was rather pitiful.
Someone please help me, my fish tank is soooo dirty and soooo smelly. Send a comment to onemomthreeboys@hotmail.com, thanks so much.

I couldn't stand the smell coming from the home of our fish one day, so I cleaned it good! I used oxigel, and I rinsed it and rinsed it and rinsed it. The fish lasted 4 hours max. The kids have never let me live it down.
I can't keep fish or bake bread.
